What an excellent evening's entertainment! I have seen both plays on offer by the OSC now - and both are fabulous! This is the best Earnest I have ever seen - a talented ensemble and director daring to treat it as a farce! It works delightfully well. The cast are astonishing - from the arrogant beautiful Algernon (a glorious Christian Edwards), to the nerdy Jack (a well paced Henry Everett); it is the first time I have believed that these characters are actually arguing brothers. Lady Bracknell is comically spot on (John Brenner sporting a great wig, a glorious performance), and her daughter (Kali Peacock) is following in her mum's footsteps. Great support from Rod Matthew as Lane, Nigel Lister, Clare Fraenkel, and Ian Bass. If you go and see one open air production in Oxford this summer - make it their Earnest.

Not that that deterred audiences at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. This is already the highest grossing straight play in Broadway history, with tickets in the stalls a knee-trembling $167 a piece. Which made the fact that the five people sitting next to me left at the interval all the more staggering. “Life is too short, honey,” one of the departing told me, putting a good dinner ahead of nigh-on $1,000 down the drain.

You could not have described one of Renes' many directing abilities any better than you did!! I have never been able to put into words what he does for an actor! I have just said..ALWAYS trust him...and he makes me look 10x better than I am!! He covers my ass! I know whatever role I am in for a play of his I will be good because he won't let me fail! And that in itself is a wonderful feeling! And he very much lets the actor work with their instincts as well and "own" the role so it feels authentic and organic not like something a director has told you to do. The trust goes both ways..he very much trusts and respects his actors and gives them a lot of room to explore and contribute to the process. But you are so right he mines the script and the character for everything that is written and a lot that is not to make the play so much deeper and richer and it is so emotionally fulfilling! It is every actors dream to work with Rene' and rightfully so! I feel blessed every single time. Not to be overly sappy but it almost feels like a religious experience by the time you reach the end that you are presenting the audience. As an actor you pour your heart and soul into every character and I feel the same about all the others I watch on stage. Even I get caught up every night in the emotion of their inner struggles. Its really quite amazing and came as quite a surprise to me this time. I simply am unable to control my tears several times throughout the play. That RARELY happens...its that real to me!

Wow. Thanks so much for your beautifully written review of "Underneath The Lintel". I've garnered some good ones over the years, but yours will certainly be on the top of the reviews section of my press packets.
