Best of 2017? DFW fosters a diverse, vibrant theatre community with more talent expanding its depth and range every year. Many interesting roles for women in 2017…. Despite the focus on harassment issues and the #MeToo paradigm shift, DFW theatre trends towards more parity in male/female engagement. It’s always easy to recall an array of … Continue reading

On Hallowed Ground at Second Thought Theatre

“Most guys don’t like what I do…feel they’re less of a guy around me. I take the guy spot, and they don’t know where they belong.” The female fighter pilot in Grounded Some reviews beg to be written. Second Thought Theatre’s Grounded by George Brandt has haunted me since I witnessed last Friday the 13th’s … Continue reading

Another year of outstanding D/FW thespian endeavor rolls by. Herein I post the decisions arrived at by the Dallas-Fort Worth Theatre Critics Forum after three hours of deliberation, negotiation, advocacy and munching David Novinski’s delicious gluten-free brownies to finish our potluck meal at Martha’s. I’m stoked by the diversity and quality of performance art in … Continue reading

And when I love thee not Chaos is come again. Act 3, Scene 3 Othello Chaos is come again.…. Chaos “comes again” with the heat of a raging forest fire and tension of a python squeezing prey with steel-taut coils in Second Thought Theatre’s production of Shakespeare’s Othello. It runs through August 8 in Bryant … Continue reading

WHY THINGS BURN: Trick or Treat with Van Quattro

Performance Art with a Fright Night Deadline! Most of you folks in the North Texas theatre community recognize Van Quattro as the world-weary donut shop owner who stole the show in Tracy Letts’ Superior Donuts at Theatre Three in 2012 or as the grim psycho with a freaky hand fetish in Second Thought Theatre’s A … Continue reading

2013-14 DFW Theater Critics Forum Awards

Some of these shows I did not see. A number I  would not honor with awards. EVER. I am disappointed that neither Ochre House’s Christhelmet (directed by Matthew Posey) nor Diana Sheehan’s  Full Gallop or her sophisticated cabaret,  Searching for Gertrude Lawrence at WaterTower Theatre met the critical popularity threshold. I am quite thrilled for other wins. Call it a draw…. Direction: … Continue reading

Git Mo’ Sausage: The Cockfight Play

There is more hot sausage in this clip art cartoon than in the entirety of Mike Bartlett’s graphically named Olivier Award-winning play, euphemistically referred to as “The Cockfight Play” by print publications that can’t print its title. Too bad. It could be interesting to see a play dealing directly with many aspects of the human … Continue reading
